Worm Ditch or Black Pig’s Race

A 4.4km length of embankment runs alongside the River Shannon to the south-west of the village of Dowra. The earthworks may be of glacial origin.

Worm Ditch

Situated 6km south of Cavan town, the linear earthwork curves around the south side of a drumlin at Ardkill More for a possible total distance of 2.15km (surviving for 1.36km). A portion 150m in length has been removed by a quarry, and investigation of the sections in the quarry face by Kieran Campbell indicated that it consisted of a single bank (5–7m wide by 2m high) and ditch (4m wide by 1.3m deep).
